Brooke Borcherding – 5th year Bachelor of Fine arts student at the U of O, 2010

Originally from Santa Monica, CA I was drawn to Eugene four years ago in major part because of its natural beauty. Both places I live are visually inspiring to me, and provoke the need to represent scenes from these locations on canvas.

My background love for traditional painting aesthetics has combined with a more conceptual direction that has been provoked by assignments in class. By being pushed in uncomfortable directions, I have become more involved in the application of paint and have grown to love the possibilities the medium presents. I try to maintain the physicality of paint whether it be drips, scrapes, spontaneity, texture and layering while still managing to represent something real.

These particular pieces illustrate a variety of ways in which I have attempted to achieve this goal of maintaining the integrity of the medium. By painting on site, compiling a number of sketches into one image, using a photo I took, or deconstructing an image with specific mark making, I am able to create textured landscapes, expressive scenes, or gestalt images from color and shapes.

Biography-Lynn Frost

As a child, I grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan. It was there that my first love for water became deep rooted. Although it wasn’t until later in life that I began painting, I have spent most of my adult life celebrating the moods and scenes of different rivers, lakes, and oceans…from Yellowstone Lake, to remote places in the South Pacific and South of the border. Many of my paintings are inspired by reflective impressions of water.

My images convey a sense of tranquility. I find great joy in painting details of things found in nature. Flowers are one of my favorite subjects. I am always amazed at the beautiful colors and patterns I see.

Through my work I am able to revisit adventures and distant places. A photo may capture the memory, but a painting brings back every detail of the experience for me.

Working with watercolors continues to be a journey of awareness and artistic development. It has broadened my perspective on how I view everything that I see, giving me a new way to look at the details, lines, colors, and textures of my every day world. Through watercolor, I have deepened my appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my work.

Short description of my work

Many of my paintings are inspired by travel and the natural beauty that surrounds us. From reflective water scenes, to patterns in flowers, my images convey a sense of tranquility. I specialize in landscapes and floral designs. Original watercolors, giclee prints, note cards, and magnetic bookmarks are available.

Since having graduated from the University of Oregon in 2007 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts, Autumn Tomlinson has found the inner world of conflict to be an intriguing place from which to draw inspiration. Through her eyes this “world” appears to be in constant flux and for one to forage within it, the need for adaptability is ever-present.

Consequently, Autumns recent work is an investigation focused on this idea of adaptation in regards to intimate relationships. Through the combined use of graphite and printmaking techniques she has set out to illustrate both the awkward beauty and debilitating results that arise from such a subtle, and yet dynamic, subject.

Earlier this year I inherited a ring from my great uncle–a diamond set in a large 1950’s-style men’s ring. The setting did nothing to showcase the diamond, and since the ring had been sitting unworn for decades in a safety deposit box, I knew it was time to make a change. My first thought was to bring the ring to Gary at Goldworks. He created the wedding bands for my husband and me, and has done other beautiful work for my husband’s family in Eugene, OR, where we were visiting at the time.

The ring had never, to my knowledge, been appraised. Gary was able to tell us about the old diamond, based on its cut and color, and a little about the history of the diamond business. I didn’t have any solid ideas about how I wanted the ring to look, so Gary showed us his online portfolio of different styles of rings, and we browsed through the Goldworks store and photo albums there for inspiration. I found one that had some elements I liked, but others that I wanted to change. Gary sketched a new design, incorporating what I suggested, and explaining what would be possible and what would best showcase the stone. We left the ring with Gary and flew back to our home in Boston.

Gary made a wax mold with the diamond in it and emailed pictures of the prototype ring at different angles to see what we thought. It looked great and we asked him to go ahead with the final version. Gary was able to use the gold from the original setting to create the new ring, so while it is in some ways a different ring, it is still a piece of family history–and one that will certainly not sit forgotten in a safety deposit box! I truly appreciated the chance to be so involved in the creation of this ring and am very pleased with the result. I know Great Uncle Louie would approve.

Susan and I both want you to know how happy we are with the new anniversary ring you crafted for us. It not only is a beautiful work of art. It is, for us, a worthy symbol of our relationship and our renewal of that relationship. Thank you so much.
I also want to make sure that you are comfortable with your expenses. We expected the final cost to be a little more. If there was something you overlooked, please let us know. (Did the design fee cover your time etc.?)
We both can point to some things we have crafted or had crafted, and say that they had “good karma” built into them (including an entire, very special, vacation home). The anniversary ring definitely has “good karma”. It was a very happy experience for us and seems like it was a good one for you. Thanks for that, thanks for helping our vision be realized even better than we could see it, and thanks for crafting a beautiful and meaningful anniversary ring.
